Recipe for success
There is no easy way. But I’d say persistence plays a key role. Things will be difficult in the beginning because you’re going against the tide. Just keep at it. You’ll need a strong belief in what you want to do, because most people are likely to provide you with ample scepticism. Also, stay open-minded even if you know the direction you are headed in. It’s good to get feedback and evolve your thoughts as you go along. Be rigid about what you want to do but be open to taking guidance from experienced people about the how-where-when.
And then there’s the team. You need to build a team that feels the company belongs to them and this can happen only if you believe in it from your heart.
Your unique idea
What we set about doing with Appsdaily is creating a parallel channel for selling digital products. At a time when prevalent app channels and models were not customized for the Indian customer, we chose a model better suited for India and the Indian customer, which is essentially retail, touch and feel, cash, do-it-for-me, etc.
Partnership with Kalaari
They invested in us when there was nothing to show in terms of traction and at a time when we had few believers in what we were proposing. Having investors like Kalaari, who are not afraid to see things differently, back us up has been a boon. We have Vani Kola on our board and her uniquely different way of looking at things has only added value to Appsdaily. Not to mention that they’ve always been very clear, transparent and honest with their communication.
Your first meeting
Our initial meetings with Kalaari were to-the-point. Feedback was transparent, and they did not hold back any of their thoughts. So we knew what they were thinking, what they liked, and what their concerns were. This helped us give them more information about the company so that they could make a more informed decision. Once they liked what they saw, they were very fast, and we glided through the entire investment process!
